When it comes to gaming, I can be pretty particular with the games that I enjoy and why. I tend to lean toward either giants (World of Warcraft or Call of Duty, for instance) or little known gems (Stacking or Costume Quest) but most people don’t understand my varied interests. I would say that it doesn’t even matter which game I get excited about, there’s someone who’s going to be a bitch about it. Gamers are passionate but unfortunately when you develop a strong love for certain games, you may develop hate for others. Go ahead, announce to a non-mmo player that the new WoW expansion is coming out. Or tell a Battlefield player you’re excited for the new Call of Duty – it doesn’t always end well.
I’m not here to claim these are going to be the BEST games of 2013, just the ones that I’m overly excited about. They’re all very different and they all (hopefully) are giving us new reasons to be excited about gaming. It’s the little things that get me pumped, so don’t laugh too much when I express how awesome it is to be able to pause a game at any moment, even during a cutscene (I rave about this feature daily, doesn’t even matter what game I’m talking about).
By sharing some of my own most anticipated games here on my blog, I hope to find others who are also excited about the same games for the same reasons. If not, no big deal – what are some of the games that you’re looking forward to? Feel free to comment!
I decided to start off with Bioshock Infinite? Why? Because I freaking LOVED the original Bioshock (Bioshock 2 not as much) and I fucking hate the cover design that was recently unveiled. I understand there was most likely some executive going “I want an action cover – something like Uncharted” and some designer was going “Fuck, do they even know what this game is about?” but it’s just really awful. It doesn’t even capture the amazing atmosphere that’s always so prominent in Bioshock games. Oh well, hopefully this is the only disappointment we’ll have to suffer through.
I also understand some people are disappointed about there not being multiplayer in the game. As someone who fucking loves mulitplayer and wishes there were more of it (local multiplayer, anyway. When my friends come over, I don’t always want to play New Super Mario Bros.), I’m really not that upset. Bioshock was an amazing game and I’d rather all the focus being on making Bioshock Infinite the same incredible, immersive game the original was. I never got to play Bioshock 2 online so I don’t even know if they did a good job with it. Maybe it was awesome but for me, I don’t need multiplayer to make me super excited about this game!
Fortnite! If you’re not excited about this game then you must not have heard of it! This looks like so much fun and I can’t wait to give it a try. I instantly think of Minecraft, building forts during the day to protect you from monsters at night. Love it. There’s still only basic information available about this game, but ultimately you’ll work together with others to scavenge materials and build a suitable fort. The only gameplay footage I’ve seen is found here on YouTube, reinforcing the comparison to Minecraft but making me even more excited to get my hands on this!
Beyond: Two Souls. I’m not excited about this game because of the big names stars attached to it. It actually creeps me out that the main character is Ellen Page because she’s not a favorite actress of mine. I would have preferred a no-name actor or actress because I think the Ellen Page aspect is going to be super distracting. Video Games do not need celebrities. At least, their fucking image doesn’t need to be in my game.
Anyway, I fucking loved Heavy Rain. People argued with me that it’s not a game so fine – I fucking loved Heavy Rain, the Interactive Dramatic Experience. Whatever. I love being able to make choices in a video game and Heavy Rain consisted of no easy choices to make. Another game, The Walking Dead, also does an amazing job of combining compelling storyline, tough choices, and plenty of gore. I always feel so much more engaged in games like these, leaving me begging for Beyond to come out soon, even with the god damn celebs. If I’m not too creeped out by Miss Page, I’ll probably even play it multiple times.
MMO’s are not everyone’s cup of tea, but who hasn’t been waiting for this to happen? I started with Morrowind, back on the Xbox and spent a lot of time hopping and robbing people’s houses. Oblivion was amazing and Skyrim, well, brilliant. Who wouldn’t want to frolic around in a beautiful world full of dragons, werewolves, vampires, and more? You won’t actually get to become a werewolf or vampire in this game, but they will still play a part. Also, NORD LOVE. I favor Nord in Guild Wars 2 as well, weird. I am kind of bummed you won’t be able to buy property, but those were high hopes anyway (no House Husband, either). The Elder Scrolls games have always been so large and immersive anyway, I think an MMO was the obvious choice in direction. I can’t wait!
I’ve probably spent a good portion of my life on Sim games. Sim City, The Sims, and Rollercoaster Tycoon have eaten away much of my life and I’d never, ever ask for that time back. I’m so excited for the new Sim City game but I worry since my computer can barely handle Sims 3 right now. Will I be able to build a mega metropolis (actually, I believe the goal is to build multiple cities that all work together in this new version) that can withstand natural disasters, aliens, AND my old computer? I don’t know but I’m more than willing to find out. I’m still playing Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 on a regular basis (so what I have Elite status for it on Raptr?) but I hope Sim City will swoop in and give me something new and exciting to create and manage. I love the new look and I can’t wait to see it in action, in person!
That concludes my list, however I had originally hoped to include Amnesia: a Machine for Pigs on the list but I discovered the game has a current release date of 2014 and who knows if that will keep changing. Plus, I haven’t played the original so it gives me some time to catch up.
Are these the games you’re looking forward to? Any amazing suggestions of games to check out that are coming out next year? I may have to do a Rollercoaster Tycoon post soon since that’s where I’ve been spending my time lately but I also haven’t played Minecraft since the big update and I’m itching to do some construction and survival again (practice prepping for Fortnite!).
Hope you enjoyed!
