I am personally a big fan of vinyl toys. Toys in general, really, but there’s something about the vinyl toy community that stands out. Just like in games, if the fan community has the ability to customize and create mods, that’s a powerful aspect. Games such as the Sims and Minecraft stand strong throughout the years because users have the ability to make it their own. Vinyl toys can be the same way. The stunning artistic expression that emerges from customizing toys is inspiring and although I have never customized any myself, I am an avid fan and growing collector.
My current collection is rather small. Many toys cater to a large budget but for good reason and I look forward to the day when I can bring home one of my most coveted designs. I have a growing wishlist over on Trampt.com – a website for collectors to keep track of their haves, wants, and even do some trading & dealing. The database is continually growing with designer pieces and the customized pieces you can find are just incredible! On to the collection!
Two of the oldest toys that I have are Ice-bots from KidRobot. Both of the blindbox mini figures I have are 2/25, named Light Olive Dream (Right) and Dark Olive Scare (Left). The arms and legs move, the head swivels, and they feature adorable little scarves! I love how posable they are despite being so small, and since Ice-bots live in refrigerators, that’s often where I like to take their pictures. I would love to have the entire collection of these little guys (15 total), as they aren’t any that I dislike!
Another older toy I have is the School Girl from the City Folk series of Sick Girl toys. The artist is Nathan Jurevicius and there are definitely a few more of these that I’d like to own, especially from the Swamp Folk series! She doesn’t move but the books on her head do come off, although I’m not sure why you’d want to remove them. Maybe they’re interchangeable with some of the other toys’ accessories. She was also a blindbox but I was happy with surprise! Pictured with my School Girl toy is an Observation Drone MK IV – Pink (um, it’s pretty red though) Dunny from KidRobot. This was part of the 2013 Side Show Series, designed by Cris Rose, and I believe it was 1/20 or 2/20. This came from LootCrate, for which I received a 3-month subscription for my birthday this year. I love this little guy and I definitely have some of the other Side Show toys on my want list.
Also from LootCrate I received The Nord from The Elder Scrolls Online collection, which was designed specifically for LootCrate customers. I love this toys as I’m a huge Elder Scrolls fan and he’s incredibly adorable. He features a removable Dragonborn helmet and tiny axe. He made me wish I still had Skyrim to play! The same month LootCrate also shipped out Game of Thrones Mystery Minis from Funko and I received a White Walker. As someone who’s not a huge fan of the show, I was happy with the White Walker since he’s pretty cool looking! I believe he’s something like 2/24, I’d have to check the box again to be sure.
One of the coolest figures that I own isn’t actually a vinyl toy but I had to include him anyway, since he’s been with me forever. I have always loved aliens, even since I was a small child and this figurine has always been one of my favorite possessions. It’s unfortunate, but during one of the many times I’ve moved in my life, that I lost the marble he once held, sustained a few scuffs and bruises, and his head also broke off. I have since glued it back together but I always felt bad for the little guy!
Being a wrestling fan, there was one Funko figure that I just had to have. Scratch that…two. This CM Punk vinyl toy actually has a pink variant that I would LOVE to own but was only sold in Hot Topics stores and I was not able to find one. His head turns but like all other Funko figures, he’s still pretty small. That’s one of my main issues when it comes to vinyl toy collecting is that the figures can be so damn small!! That’s why, you’ll discover if you continue reading, I prefer some of my other vinyls that are much bigger. The small size takes away from CM Punk especially since he’s missing his most of his tattoos, most noticeably his sleeves.
I was lucky enough to attend Comikaze Expo this past year in Los Angeles and it was a blast! While there I spotted the TokiDoki booth and as if they weren’t cool enough as it is, I discovered Unicornos. Oh man do I love unicorns, haha. I picked up a blindbox 2″ Vandalo and also a blindbox Sakura phone charm but I wish I had also grabbed a blank one, just so I could finally customize my own. I’d probably never do it though, unable to decide what I’d want to make and too nervous that I’d mess it up.
Now I need to talk about some of my favorite toys. Of course, they just happen to all be Star Wars, but honestly the reason that I love them so much has more to do with their style and size. Funkos are great but they don’t measure up next to the Applause or Might Mugg figures that I own, I’m sorry. I had a larger collection of these Star Wars Applause vinyl figures but over time many of them were lost. There are also pieces missing from these (Lando and Luke both had helmets, Luke also had a lightsaber) but a quick search of Ebay assured me that I will be able to affordably replace them! Not only are these figure detailed and light, but they’re close to a foot tall each. That lovely gentlemen in the back is Prince Xizor of Shadows of the Empire and he’s amazing. The Tusken Raider figure is also one to admire, but honestly I love them all and really wish to replace all the ones that I have lost.
As for the Mighty Muggs, I did not have the opportunity to take my own photos, but here is an example of Darth Vader! The Might Muggs span across more entities than Star Wars, each figure more adorable than the last. I always felt these were well worth the $10 – $20 price tags and more adorable to me than most Funkos. I very much anticipate completing at least the Star Wars collection of these, hopefully grabbing some of the comic book characters along the way!
That’s it for now! I hope you enjoyed checking out some of my toy collection and with any luck I’ll be adding more soon!
